International Festival of Culture – Teesside University 20th March 2012
15 of our year 9 pupils were lucky enough to be invited to Teesside University this week to find out more about languages, the opportunities which are open to you if you know other languages, and to meet other pupils from schools in the area.
In the initial session, we were with many other year 9’s from other schools in the area, and after a great power point about how many languages you can study to a high level in the north east, we were all given cards with a greeting on, from different cultures and you had to go round the auditorium greeting people to find your culture/group, and then the groups all had to find out things they had in common, and much of the feedback was in different languages – amazing! We were then accompanied by Lucy and Olga within our own school group, for a session with Isabel and her colleague to learn more about Russia. The pupils learnt the Russian alphabet, could say and write their own name in Russian, and recognise words similar to English but written in the Russian script. Isabel who led the session has sent me the links we saw(many thanks), so please see them below, including a great cartoon. Isabel has also said that if any pupil has any questions about studying Russian, they are welcome to contact her. Please see Mrs Roe if you need contact details. After refreshments, where pupils were given a Chinese fortune cookie, we went to a session about Vietnam. We learnt some facts about the country from ‘Mi’ and we then attempted to make a paper crane . I’m including the link for the pupils (and me!!!) who found it very challenging!!! http://youtu.be/FSijU52XJ7w. While we were making the cranes, there was an African drumming session was going on next door – what an experience! Many thanks to Routes into Languages for letting us come to the morning – it was much appreciated!
