Mrs Roe’s weekly update
Phew! The end of this half term and it’s been such a busy time lately. Spanish and Urdu GCSE exams have taken place this week, and Miss Bell and Miss Salkeld said goodbye their classes in true Spanish style. Miss Bell made a paëlla for the year 11 Spanish classes which was really successful! Another class at the end of the Spanish carousel also enjoyed some Spanish tapas, courtesy of Miss Bell too – to give a real flavour to the Spanish lessons! Our FCSE marks from last year, went off to the moderators, final plans were put in place for the Pas-de-Calais trip, the year 8 pupils finished the end of their third taster language, and just one more language to go! We’ll give the year 8 pupils a ‘student voice’ questionnaire a few lessons into the final stage of the Carousel after half term, to find out what the pupils thought of the extra languages experience this year, which language they would prefer to study as their second language next year, and also to help our future planning! We all enjoyed our final lessons, and the classes I taught German to, rose to the challenge of singing a German song, which was amazing after only five weeks. Pupils can find the song on the German songs category or click on this link . http://youtu.be/WS8YQK6x9BM - it’s very addictive!!!! We had the year 8 parents’ evening this week too, and it was great to hear that so many parents are supportive of their children learning other languages at Grangefield. The year 7 pupils have amazed us with their progress, their pronunciation is commendable at this stage and they have done some amazing homework recently. I have been in contact with the organisers of the next World Languages Olympics which will take place in the Autumn term! Last year we were 24th in the European Language Olympics, which we thought was amazing, but in 2011 the competition is going to be even bigger, competition will be fierce but I’m sure Grangefield can rise to the challenge. More details to follow – but in the meantime – click on the following link - http://www.languageperfect.com/worldchamps/ambassadorhonourboard.html How brilliant is Grangefield !!!!! Year 9’s also continued to be able to experience some Mandarin teaching and my year 9 enjoyed their last Mandarin lesson with Miss Yuan where we had some real Chinese tea which was appreciated. Miss Yuan loved 9g4 and found them very receptive to the language. After half term, other year 9 classes will have the opportunity to learn some Mandarin. I have now supported Miss Yuan in a number of lessons, and although even I find it difficult, am beginning to get to grips with the concept of the different tones – however the pupils are grasping this much quicker than me or the other teachers, so we’re even more impressed with our pupils!!!! We said good-bye to Marisa and Claire our Spanish and French assistants this week. Marisa is flying back to southern Spain as I write and Claire is returning to Normandy for the summer. We wish Marisa all the best in her future career, and Claire is returning to Grangefield next year !!!!! Claire loves the north-east of England as much as I love Normandy!!! I spend my summers in Normandy, so we will be meeting up with Claire this summer in ‘la belle France’. Some of our year 7’s saw the film ‘Belleville Rendez-vous’ one of the most fantastic animated films I have seen, and our year 7’s are already getting excited about the Tour de France! This year, the ‘tour’ will be going near Brécey in Normandy which is where I spend my summers. Unfortunately, I can’t go, as we’re still at school – but I will make no apology for following the ‘Tour’ on that day! Last year, the ‘Tour’ passed through Flumet, which is where Mme Plouchart goes with her family and last year it was so exciting to see places she knows so well! Well, this update was rather longer than usual, so time for the homework. Parents, we always give homework in MFL, so, if your child’s planner looks empty – then, I presume the pupils haven’t written the homework down, but all KS3 Grangefield pupils should be spending 30 minutes, at least, on MLF work, and so if they finish their homework early, then they should do some extra revision on one of the many websites we recommend. Some of these we subscribe to, and our pupils know the log-in numbers. Having said this, the homework of 7g1 and 7f2 was so impressive - you should be proud of your children!
