Mrs Roe’s weekly update
We had the official launch of the Confucius classroom this week, with a programme of activities for the various delegates who came to the launch, including the Consul General and the provincial official from Hebei province. We now have an actual Confucius classroom, with a Confucius classroom plaque which was presented to the school. Miss Yuan organised a lesson with 8g2 who also sang a song in Mandarin, and some girls and Miss Yuan performed an impressive Chinese Fan Dance. The following day, not to be outdone, 8f2, boys and girls had a great time, also learning a Chinese Tai chi Fan Dance, and all managed to open the fans on cue, a skill which continues to elude me! I found a youtube clip to demonstrate this, which is the same song Miss Yuan used with our year 8's - how brilliant is that!
Also this week, Miss Lodge and the PE Department organised the Grangefield Dance show which ran for two nights, was packed out, and show-cased some fabulous dancing and singing talent amongst our pupils!
With regards our other languages, we were finishing off testing for the FCSE French and Spanish exams, and next term our year 9’s will be starting the final module. Year 9 pupils are in the thick of the option process and numbers taking languages have increased dramatically for next year, which is great, as pupils realise the importance of languages in the world today. We should be running French, Spanish, and Urdu GCSE classes, and hopefully in the future, as the effect of the year 8 language carousel takes effect, may also be able to offer Mandarin and German to GCSE too.
Miss Bell showed some of a great French series to her year 8’s this week and the pupils were very interested in seeing more episodes so have asked for the link. I will put a Teachers TV link in the list of recommended websites called Sam in France, but in the meantime – here is the link to the sitcom style series http://www.teachers.tv/series/extra-french Hopefully, the other classes will get a chance to view it too! 7g1 did a fantastic fashion show in French , brought clothes in to dress up, and organised themselves and the puppets in a fashion extravaganza , and I was amazed at the extremely good pronunciation and command of French of the pupils! With regards the trip to the Pas-de-Calais in June, passport forms were finally in for the collective passport. Shortly after Easter I will organise a meeting with parents, to explain the final details – not long to go now! I know the teachers and pupils are really looking forward to the trip.
Anyway, that’s all for this term - all the language teachers at Grangefield wish everyone a happy and relaxing Easter and we’ll see you all next term!
